The Story:
The Jeep stopped at the opening to a long concrete tunnel that curved out of sight. A man opened the door for him, and he hopped out. Even the air smelled like metal, and he couldn’t wait to get started.
“Captain, they’re waiting for you below.”
Escorted by two men, he proceeded down the tunnel. He had been training for this for two years and having to travel another ten minutes was excruciating.
He turned to the guard on his left.
“Have you seen it?”
“Yes, sir.”
“How is it?”
The guard gave him a puzzled expression.
“Sir, you’ll see it as soon as we…”
The captain turned to the guard on his right and tried again.
“How is it?”
The second guard thought for a moment before answering.
“It’s what we always should have had. And with you it will be, sir.”
He put his head down and grinned.
The lights in the tunnel were shining a brilliant white, but just as they were rounding the corridor’s curve, the lights changed, washing the tunnel in an ominous red hue. A warning siren began sounding, and someone spoke through the intercom.
“Report to your battle stations, immediately!”
The guards grabbed the Captain by his arms and began running.
“They’re early!”
“Sir, we have to get you to your pack, now!”
“My pack? I haven’t even used it yet!”
“Then, I hope those simulators were real good, sir!”
They ran the rest of the corridor until they reached a bay at the bottom. Concrete debris was raining on them, indicating the battle had begun on the surface.
“You get the captain suited up! I’ll check on the battle going on upstairs.”
The guards split up, as the captain walked over to a magnificent device. It was silver and tubular, and it was begging him to fly it.
He slipped his back into a pair of straps. The pack recognized him, instantly and prompted for a startup cycle, which he granted. It powered up in a matter of seconds, and he was ready to fly.
“Captain?”
He looked at the guard standing just beside him.
“Save us.”
He nodded and shot out of the bay just as it exploded.
