The Story:

The tunnel was long and dark, but he felt safe enough, having a flashlight with him. He looked back to the grass and fresh air at the entrance, reconsidering his impulse spelunking expedition. If he turned around, he wouldn’t have an adventure, and he had always wanted an adventure.

Pressing forward, he noticed the tunnel was becoming more narrow. The rocks scraped across his skin as he crawled his way to an unknown destination, and he began to dread the return trip if he couldn’t find an outlet.

After more than an hour of clawing his way through a tunnel barely wider than himself, he was finally at a stretch where the roof was tall enough for him to crouch. He squatted and let out a sigh of relief. Then, his flashlight flickered.

Panicking, he pleaded with his ally, the light, to stay with him as it flickered several times. And there was darkness. He shook it and banged it against his palm. Nothing.

This was pure darkness—not like a room with the lights off. Fully dilated, his eyes couldn’t find a single ray of light to consume. They were like baby birds waiting on a mother that may never return—just as hungry and just as helpless.

But they did find light. There was a faint glow in the distance ahead of him. It was growing stronger and seemed to be moving toward him. It became blindingly intense and just as it reached him, disappeared.

He heard what sounded like laughing as two transparent people faded into view in front of him, emitting a glow.

“Be honest, you were scared, right?”
“Well, of course, he was scared, and hey… Do you smell pee?”

The two ghosts cackled with each other at his expense.

“Who… How?”

His fear prevented a coherent sentence.

“Look, Drake, he’s speechless.”
“My good looks do that every time.”

They laughed again.

“Look, I’m… I’m just gonna go.”
“Whoa!” They both shouted simultaneously.
“You can’t just leave.”
“Yeah, obviously, you can’t just leave.”
“Yeah… You’re one of us now, buddy!”

He didn’t understand.

“I’m… I’m not dead.”
“Of course, you’re not… yet.”

They disappeared, and the tunnel went dark.
