This is a #storygram (mini-stories) from my Instagram, which you can get to via the social media links at the top of this site. I do my best to make them a daily thing for you to enjoy and share with your friends! I really love making them, as they allow me to simultaneously scratch my photography and writing itches while I’m busy with filmmaking. Thank you very much for reading and sharing them! Don’t forget to check out my film Portfolio too!

The Story:

“Why are you making me do this?!”

Trace was furious with his father. He couldn’t understand why they had to keep going. They had already lost the All-Species-Welcome Father/Son Marathon. Everyone had crossed the finish line hours ago.

“Because, buddy, you chose to enter it.”

He hadn’t chosen to enter it but to win it. And now, the hope of winning was as far away from them as the finish line still was.

Yet, here they were, still traveling down the empty path with no one to watch them try, no one to see them finish, and no one to care when they do.

“Everyone is gone, Dad! No one will ever even know we finished! This is pointless!”

His father stopped and looked down at the path they were on. Without turning around, he let his son hear words of hard truth, spoken directly from his heart:

“My dear son… We are snails. No amount of training will ever make us faster. There are limitations in life, despite what you’ve been told. Those other animals are rewarded by each other for beating the ones with limits. But I want you to learn to reward yourself for doing hard things that are only limited by your willpower. You will never beat everyone at this race, but you can finish it. You can cross the finish line. The reward is knowing for yourself that you did it. They don’t have to know. But if you carry the knowledge that you actually finished this race throughout your life, who knows what all you might finish?”
