This is a #storygram (mini-story) from my Instagram, which you can get to via the social media links at the top of this site. I do my best to make them daily for you to enjoy! YES, many of them will hopefully be expounded upon in novels or other future writing endeavors of mine. Thank you very much for reading and sharing them! The Story:

He headed north, with his six year old daughter asleep in the backseat. She was tough, and he knew she would be fine. He wasn’t as sure about himself.

When the riots started, they were isolated–a small town here or a city block there. As the weeks became months, the crowds merged into an organized group, simply calling themselves The Resolute. Only three months after their formation, they grew into an army of over one million.

Two nights ago, an explosion of gunfire had awakened them. The Resolute took over their city and pushed back the military with surprising ease. After lying on the ground with his daughter for several hours, he knew he didn’t want her to grow up in a war zone. With international flights grounded, Canada was his quickest option.

Anyone not with The Resolute was considered to be an agent of the government. He almost didn’t get them out before the road blocks were set up, and he was determined to not come that close again.

He had been driving for 37 hours, only stopping at gas stations for fuel and food. At last he saw the Canadian border up ahead, but something was wrong. A military man forced him to stop.

“The Canadians aren’t letting Americans through anymore. You’ll have to turn around.”
“Sir, it’s okay. I have a passport and…”
“That doesn’t matter. Turn around.”

He never expected to be turned away from Canada or anywhere else. He had a passport and that meant he was supposed to get through.

“Sir, please, I’m just trying to take my daughter to a safer…”
“Turn around now! This is your final warning!”

He turned his car around, having no idea where he should go. A few miles down the road, a man beside a white van was flagging him down. He stopped and cracked his window.

“Do you need help?”
“No, but you do, man. You want across the border?”
“But that’s illegal.”
“Would you rather stay here and take your chances with The Resolute? For $15,000 I can get you over there.”

He never thought he would become an illegal immigrant, but his daughter’s safety was worth the risk. He pulled a bag from the trunk that contained the savings he withdrew from the bank months ago.
