The Story:

Thousands of people had migrated to the street below to cheer on the new year. Two minutes remained. Two minutes until everyone would forget the mistakes they had made the previous year and look forward with renewed hope. But not her. In two minutes, she would begin remembering what happened one year ago at the same time and location where she now stood.

Staring at the gazebo on the balcony, she replayed the scenario in her mind when she and her husband had decided to part ways. In a year he had never called, so she assumed he must be off living the dream life he had shouted at her about. For months she waited for divorce papers, but they never came.

She stepped into the cold and walked between the pillars of the gazebo, wishing she could take back the things she said to him. One minute remained until the new year, and she had only one impossible resolution.

She heard the door to the balcony open behind her. Spinning around, she saw only darkness from the gazebo lights washing over her eyes. Then, he stepped into the light.

They stood in the lights, absorbing the view of each other like a breathtaking landscape that was familiar but refreshingly captivating. The crowd on the street began counting down from twenty seconds.

“Turns out that a life with you was my dream all along,” he said with a smile.

She smiled in return, but the memories of his shouted words a year earlier vied for her heart, so she frowned and turned her back to him. He stepped between the pillars and gently turned her face to his. Her brows lifted when she saw him in tears. The countdown reached ten seconds.

“I’m sorry, Rachel… I’m so sorry.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks, shedding the bad memories. She felt the hope that everyone else was cheering for, and in that moment her resolution was already complete—forgive him.

The crowd below was shouting louder than ever.

“Five… Four… Three… Two… One…”

They held each other close, sealing their mutual resolution to forgive each other with a kiss.
