The Story:

“Yes, you heard me correctly. Warnings. Bah! Once they decided to accept the fact that we were real, did they welcome us? No! They put up warning signs—signs that we were around, signs that we were crossing the roads, signs to not stop and talk to us… Nonsense.”

Tillius Whitehall jotted down notes as fast as he could. He was the only one allowed to interview the trolls, and he wanted to make certain he accurately conveyed their grievances to the public.

“So, Mr. Boggledung, are you saying that your people have never eaten any humans?”
“Oh, eaten… Yes, eaten. And ripped apart. And terrorized. But I mean, these cases are few and far between. If we weren’t out here starving and bored, we wouldn’t have a reason to eat humans.”
“Or torment them?”
“Ah, yes, the tormenting. Well, trolls like to play with their food. It’s part of our culture, that tendency.”

The old troll waddled over to the fire place and threw more wood on the fire. A large iron cauldron, big enough for a human to bathe in, hung above the fire.

“Have you ever eaten a human? You personally, I mean.”
“Me?”

He waddled to the wooden door to his underground den and bolted it shut.

“No, young Whitehall. No, I have not,” Boggledung said with a grin. “But I hear they’re delicious.”

The troll started towards him. Whitehall leapt to his feet, backing away until he was stopped by the dirt wall.

“Wait! Wait! I’m trying to help you!”

The grin faded from Boggledung’s face, stalling Whitehall’s doom for at least another moment.

“Help me? What can you do for me? What can you do for any of us but serve as a scared little delicacy?”
“I tell stories! I’m trying to tell your story to humans!”

Boggledung leaned in to study the truth behind Whitehall’s eyes. Then, his appetite yielded to his curiosity, and he withdrew, seating himself by the fire.

“We trolls love stories. You say, you’re a storyteller, Tillius Whitehall… Convince me. Tell me the best story I’ve ever heard. Do that, and I’ll believe that you can help us and let you go. But if you fail, you’re going in the pot.”
