The Story:

They held each other tightly as they strolled along the sidewalk. This path was the same one they took every Sunday afternoon, to and from their favorite restaurant.

To some, they had a boring life full of predictability and mundane activity, but they didn’t see it that way. To them, every day was an adventure into the heart of the other, an exploration into a sea of the infinite responses of love. Their location and activity were insignificant next to the daily leaps of faith required of an unwavering relationship.

Not talking, just enjoying each other’s company, they approached an alley. Prickling on the back of his neck warned him to watch for danger, and he pulled her tighter to his side.

As they reached the alley, a masked man grabbed them and shoved them into it. He pointed a gun at them and demanded their money and jewelry.

He took out his wallet and handed it to the masked man. With tears in her eyes, she removed the golden band that had proclaimed her status for over 50 years. The masked man took them and turned to run, but as he did, a police officer rounded the corner.

The officer whipped out his gun and instructed the man to freeze. He handcuffed the man and removed his mask, and the old lovers were astonished. He was the new waiter that had served them last week.

“Gun isn’t even real,” the officer said, referring to the waiter’s weapon.

The old couple looked at each other. They had both known hard times over the decades. The struggles of life, the effort of love had cultivated a deep empathy within each of them, and again, without passing words between each other they knew what must be done.

“Officer, we’re not pressing charges.”
“What? Sir, this man…”
“Is in need of a good meal. Can we buy you some dinner, son?”

The masked man looked more surprised than the policeman, and his eyes began to well up with tears.

“Why?”
“Because you are loved. Now, how about a good meal?”

He nodded in acceptance, shaking out a tear. The old man draped his arm around his attacker’s shoulders as he and his wife walked the man to their second choice for a diner.
