The Story:

The fog was beautiful to her—a sheet of white silk draped over the land to soothe it to sleep. She understood why some people didn’t like it, though. It conceals and creates an unknown. Everyone is afraid of the unknown.

Below her, the cloaked river laid dormant, holding its charm for the sun to pull open the curtain blocking its light. It would’ve been the perfect start to the perfect day, designed just for her, had it not been for Victor Lamb.

He couldn’t surprise someone like her. No one could. She had heard the tapping of his cane for 0.394 miles.

“Lovely morning.”
“If you say so, Mr. Lamb.”

She could see his breath dissipate with every syllable and felt a pang of envy.

“I’m curious… um…”
“Katie.”
“Ah, yes, that’s right. I’m curious, Katie, when did you know I was following you? The path entrance?”
“Yesterday. 2:48:27:58pm is when your foot made contact with the tarmac.”
“You were there?”
“I was sitting in my living room, approximately 3.7 miles away.”
“Extraordinary!”

She identified her current emotion as frustration and tapped her fingers on a beam of the bridge.

“Why are you here, doctor?”
“Simple. I’m here to bring you back onto the team.”

He was always pointing at someone with that cane of his. Now was no different.

“I quit, Victor. You of all people should understand why.”
“I do. And you performed brilliantly during the war, but we need you again.”

Lamb stared at the tip of his cane, which was molded into a silver eye. Only he could know how much tech was hidden in the tip of that cane alone.

“Why are you here, Katie?”
“I like the fog.”
“Fascinating… But I think it’s more. I think you’re trying to find yourself still. Let me help.”

Help. Being given her freedom was help enough, but her protocol stirred a certain loyalty.

“Very well, Mr. Lamb. Do I still address you as creator at headquarters?”
“I’ll tell you what: Call me Victor, and I’ll call you Katie. No more ‘creator’ or ‘Unit 372.’ Maybe they’ll both catch on.”

She smiled.

“Report to Android Division 3 tomorrow… Katie.”
