The Story:

The living room was lit only by the faint glow of a TV. He was sound asleep on the couch, where his exhaustion had triumphed over his will to get in bed, as it did every night.

It wasn’t until the TV went to silent static that he awoke. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. His chihuahua looked at him from its pillow on the ground.

“Looks like the cable is out again, girl.”

His mouth opened wide into a long yawn as he stood up. Going to bed made sense now that he was awake. He stumbled over to the back door to turn off the other house lights.

He flipped off the inside lamp over the door, but when he turned off the outside lamp, the darkness revealed an unfamiliar light source. It appeared to be moving closer.

The TV began making an uninterrupted beeping. He walked back to the screen and saw several strange symbols accompanied by a countdown timer. After ten seconds, a man’s face appeared on the screen.

“Rael Ginsel, this transmission is to inform you that you’ve been selected under section 27, paragraph G of the Treaty of Mutual Exploration, which states that every quarter one citizen of Earth shall be randomly selected for the honor of being dissected for study by our alien brethren. This is a mandatory requirement and cannot be appealed or refused. Congratulations. Please, step outside and prepare for immediate abduction.”

Of all the unlucky people on Earth, they had selected him. They usually kept to Europe or Asia, but they must’ve begun abducting in North America.

Running was futile, and he knew it. There were countless reports of people who ran but failed, and they were all executed or dissected and dead—if there was any difference. But had anyone ever chosen to fight?

The initiative was fairly new. Maybe he stood a chance. After all, the aliens weren’t even big.

He grabbed a pocket knife and an axe and stepped outside, where a bright circle of light was waiting for him.

The battle for his life was about to begin.
