The Story:
“Come on, Grandad! Come on!”
His grandson pedaled faster and faster, while he struggled to keep up. Every time they rode bikes together, he would want to ride as fast as he could. He always had some reason.
“Good gracious, son! What’re you in a hurry for this time? Dinner? Pirates chasing us?”
“No, Grandad! We have to beat the rain!”
He had been so focused on not having a heart attack that rain clouds had slipped over him undetected. His grandson thought they were running from the rain, but he knew they wouldn’t make it.
“Wait a minute. Wait.”
He halted his grandson and stopped beside him.
“You’re not afraid of a little rain, are ya?”
“Mom says I can’t be out in it, or I’ll get sick.”
“That’s hogwash, my boy!”
It started to sprinkle.
“Lemme show you what you do with the rain. Take off your shoes.”
His grandson looked at him as if he had lost his mind.
“Go on. Take ’em off.”
He and his grandson removed their shoes as it began pouring rain.
“First off, when it rains, you can dance in it.”
He began dancing around. His grandson’s jaw dropped. But as he kept dancing, the boy decided it looked fun and joined him. They danced and laughed for several minutes as the raindrops covered every square inch.
“Now, here’s the best part.”
He walked into the grass in his bare feet and found a patch of uncovered dirt that had just become mud. He stepped into it and wiggled his toes a bit.
“Now, you try it.”
His grandson walked over and sank his feet into the mud. He smiled at him.
“This is cool, Grandad!”
Almost immediately, the rain stopped and the sun peeked through. His smile turned more serious as he knelt down to be eye to eye with his grandson, and he took him by the shoulders.
“Sometimes, what you’re pedaling from will be what everyone else pedals from. But these storms, they… Well, they hold some thrills. It’s okay to play in them, my boy. It’s okay to slow down and let some of them catch you. Sometimes, that’s where the best stuff is.”
