The Story:
My old job was hardly a good use of my skills. Maybe it is important to some, but I just don’t care about how many things I can get a phone to do.
When I came up with the flexible screen, they called me.
————————
“We’d like to offer you a unique opportunity,” an agent discussed with me in person.
“What is it?”
“Let’s just say, you’d be the only person in the world in this profession. Highly specialized. Just think it over and give me a call.”
He handed me a business card with only a number and his first name on it and drove away in an unmarked government vehicle.
————————
I approach the front of the building. They told me to bring nothing and to leave my car by the road.
As I step onto a metal plate in front of the left door, a slot opens in the wall and a panel presents itself. An automated female voice speaks to me.
“Identify.”
“Uh… Rendus Garrows.”
“Accepted. Please, wait here a moment, Mr. Garrows.”
This is cool. Finally, a job with superior equipment and opportunities to really develop new technology. It is everything I’ve hoped for.
“Mr. Garrows, welcome.”
The agent that recruited me is standing behind me. His arms are folded behind his back, and he is wearing a black suit and a grin.
“Hey, Grant. Can you tell me about the job now that I’m here?”
I get the feeling there is something deeper than what I previously understood about this job.
“If you step through those doors, Mr. Garrows, you’ll never be allowed to leave. Ever. This is your last chance.”
My family members are all dead, and I have no children. I had expected something like this would happen. I’ll miss my friends, but they’re more like acquaintances, anyhow.
“Got coffee in there?” I ask.
“Loads,” he says through a wide smile.
I turn back to the door and pull it open. One more deep breath, and I walk in.
Directly inside, strange creatures walk up and begin touching and poking me. I realize that my new job will be with some very advanced technology.
