The Story:

A group of hikers had discovered it. Every media website had pushed the mystery as their top story for weeks, and scientists from around the globe were traveling to Canada to study it. Everyone was competing to be the first to answer the question of the century: What’s inside the chamber?

No one knew who had put it there, but they all assumed the contents would lay to rest the other nagging questions.

Henry Straun was reporting live for CNN the day it opened.

“Dr. Floramín, what have you learned about the chamber so far?”
“We have discovered several ventilation ducts that appear to be for exhaust. The power source appears to be large and buried deeply underneath the chamber. Still no idea what’s inside. If you look at the…”

All of the exhaust ports spewed white clouds, simultaneously. A scientist screamed as the mist engulfed his right arm. When it had stopped, the injured scientist gasped in horror at his immovable, blue arm and began to run. In his haste his arm collided with a portion of the chamber and shattered into thousands of pieces. He collapsed to the ground, passed out.

Straun was the first to speak.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the moment we’ve been waiting for.”

Dr. Floramín stood between his fear and curiosity. He looked at the general in charge of the military on the site, and they both turned to the spectators and began yelling.

“Get back! Everyone, back up!”

As the crowd shuffled backwards, a compartment opened in a side of the chamber. The white mist poured out from the opening as a cot-like object slid slowly out from the darkness.

Lying on the cot was a naked man who looked to be in his 30’s. He struggled to sit up, turned, and placed his feet onto the ground.

Straun called to him.

“What’s your name?”
“John Hollins. Where… What year is it?”
“March 18th, 2027.”
“March 2027,” he murmured to himself.

John motioned for Dr. Floramín, who ran over and helped him to stand.

“We don’t have much time,” said John. “We only have a few months to save the human race. Get me to an observatory, now.”
