The Story:

The creak of a wooden board echoed around a hollow room as she rocked her foot back and forth on the pedal. Light shone through the windows and revealed its secret beams in the dusty air.

It was just her and the second story room in an old brick building. Once the premiere business for the sewing needs of an entire community, The Sewing Sisters was all but finished.

She sat alone, moving a dress through a needle that pumped up and down. It was just a simple stitch job, but she was grateful for anything. She daydreamed about the days when she and her seven sisters all sat in the building, creating beautiful custom wedding gowns for giddy brides. Every day, she wondered why she had to be the one to outlive the others.

With the stitching finished, it wasn’t long before her client showed up.

“Let me see… Oh, this looks great, Miss Mary. Thank you.”

Mary noticed a sparkle on the young girl’s left hand. She pointed to it with a questioning face.

“Oh, yes! I’m getting married, Miss Mary!”

Mary folded her hands in celebration and gave the girl a big hug. As she felt the girl’s shoulders, she sketched out her size in her mind. It just might fit.

Miss Mary pointed to the dress.

“Oh, no, I haven’t picked out a dress yet. But the wedding is so soon, I’m not sure I have time to get one… No money, anyway. You know that.”

Mary put the girl’s face in her hands and smiled. Then, she shuffled over to a closet and opened the doors. The daylight streaming through a window fell on what had to be the most elaborately gorgeous gown ever created. Seeing it for the first time in years, she was right. It would fit.

She removed it from the closet and handed it to the girl.

“Oh, Miss Mary, I can’t take this!”

Mary held her hand up in silence, and with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, shooed the girl away. The girl gave her a huge hug and ran out to show her friends.

It was the last dress she and her sisters made together, worth tens of thousands. Miss Mary sat down, feeling as though she had completed her work, and fell into a peaceful, permanent sleep.
